Readers often write in to remark that I am a man, a fact of which I am generally aware. But then they point out something that often slips my mind: my travel experiences are those of a man, as well.

Some say they would prefer the column to be written by a woman, a request I parry with reminders that two of the three previous Frugal Travelers were women, and many of Daisann McLane’s and Susan Spano’s columns are still online and just as packed with insight as when first published.

Journeywoman – 12 Things You’ll Find Difficult in Northern India

12 Things You’ll Find Difficult in Northern India

Deb Corbeil is one half of Canada’s Adventure Couple. She has just finished traveling with her husband, Dave through Nepal, Sri Lanka and India where she climbed to Mount Everest Base Camp, joined a pilgrimage to Adams Peak and participated in Holi, India’s most colourful festival. Deb is quick to tell you that travelling in south India is not as extreme as the northern part of the country and it definitely was far easier there. You can read more about this couple’s adventures at http://theplanetd.com/So you want to go to India? It’s been calling you for years and you’re feeling ready to explore this fascinating, thrilling yet frustrating country. I’m writing this article while on my first trip to Northern India. For someone travelling from North America the culture shock you feel will be intense and you’ll need time to acclimatize yourself.

I know you’ll find what I have to say harsh but don’t be put off by it. It’s meant to prepare you so that the ‘shock’ in your culture shock will not be as intense as mine was. That said, this is an experience you’ll savour for the rest of your life. I would not have missed the markets in Delhi, the splendour of the Taj Mahal, Agra’s Red Fort, the holy city of Varanasi, Rajasthan’s camel market, and the beautiful people who live here for anything in the world.

Women Should Be Able To Travel Solo

I share your sentiments, but the reality is that you can’t change reality very much very quickly. All the protesting in the world will not make Turkey much safer for women in the short run, unfortunately. But the struggle is worth it.

Thought Catalog

Last week, a woman and mother of two from New York City was found murdered in Turkey. She was there on a solo three week trip, trying to hone her new found interest and skill in photography. It is a horrible story of untimely death.

It’s a story that needs to be told, but not for the reasons that everyone keeps saying. First, let’s all try to understand that as awful as the issue of violence befalling female solo travelers is, it’s constantly sensationalized. I’m not trying to take away the absolute tragedy of this story and others like it, but women who are hurt, killed, or go missing (especially abroad) become story lines that the world media grabs onto, despite the fact that statistically, you’re more likely to be hurt or killed in your own city in a car crash or by someone you know than you are…

Where can I go for a cheap vacation? Where Our dollar is of higher value?

My wife and I would like to go traveling but at this stage of our life (We are still in college) we cannot afford grand vacations to Europe just yet. But we do want to travel and want some ideas on places we can go for cheap. Maybe a country where our dollar is of high value yet still a nice country to visit. Any ideas?? I hear Dominican Republic and Costa Rica arecheap but when I look online it doesn’t appear to be ascheap as everyone is saying.

Mark Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

Mark asks…

What is the cheapest way to fly to from Illinois to Costa Rica?

I’m going to Costa Rica for school in August and am wondering the cheapest way to do it, I live 2 hours from O’Hare and 2 hours from Milwaukee also. Thanks for the help!!

Yaz CheapFlightsToMauritius cropped Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

Yaz answers:

Your best bet is to go out of O’Hare.

For August, Sprirt has a $442 fare, but after the seat charges and carry-on charges are added in, it will be $540.

Personally, I would go with Taca Airlines. It’s a very good airline that’s always on time and provides good customer service. They are $520 and you get free carry on and up to 2 checked bags (50lbs each). They have a very young fleet (no 40 year planes like AA). And their newest planes have individual back-of-the-seat TV’s. You get a FREE hot meal and FREE drinks (including alcoholic). It’s only a 1 hour layover in San Salvador or Guatemala. Total travel time is only about 7 hours.

The next best would be Continental for $537 through Houston. Also an excellent airline.

James Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

James asks…

Would it be cheaper to buy a Costa Rica vacation package from Hotels.com or separately?

I’m planning a short trip to Costa Rica for about 5-6 days. Would it be cheaper to buy a vacation package deal from hotels.com or buy airfare separately online and then book hotels locally when I get there? Where would be a good andcheap place to stay in San Jose and Quepos? What are the availability around this time of year? What is the best traveling method from San Jose to Quepos?

Yaz CheapFlightsToMauritius cropped Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

Yaz answers:

Go to
http://www.ilovecostarica.com for info…. Or

http://www.truecostarica.com loads of info available.

I saw book a package deal, especially cheaper if you want to actually tour the countryside….there are some wonderful deals for just under $1,000 for 10 days including tours throughout the country, meals and hotels throughout the country. You get to see the sites, taste the foods and stay at more than one hotel/villa! I have friends in San Jose and hope to go down for a visit next spring – stay with them some, but plan to take a package tour also…Have fun!

Ruth asks…

Where can i get a Hepatitis A Vaccine and how much would it cost?

I will be traveling to Costa Rica this summer and this vaccine information would be great to know. Thanks.

Yaz CheapFlightsToMauritius cropped Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

Yaz answers:

You should get hep a and b vaccines. You can get them low cost at your county health department or at your regular doctors. It’s a multi shot process that you have to go back for, so get started soon.

It’s quite cheap…i think i paid like $50 total at the health department a few years ago.

Donald asks…

What Hotels do you recommend in Manuel Antonio Beach Costa Rica?

am looking for something Cheap but decent and clean. Travelling with my parents and a 2 year old. I am staying 5 days in Costa Rica,

Yaz CheapFlightsToMauritius cropped Travel Costa Rica Cheap Best Answers To Your Questions

Yaz answers:

If you’re looking for cheap then the best recommendation is to look somewhere besides Manuel Antonio as prices there are higher than anywhere else in Costa Rica.

Hotel Playa Espadilla near the park entrance is nice and there are some reasonable options like Mono Azul or Tres Banderas on the hill. In Quepos (5km north of Manuel Antonio park) the widemouth frog backpackers is cheap, decent and clean.

David asks…

Need a cheap way to get to Costa Rica?

My family and I want to go back to Costa Rica next summer for a couple of months. We’re teachers so we have lots of time and little money.
I can’t afford the nearly $3,000 it takes to fly there and back.
Does anyone know a cheaper way to go, even if it is slow. I can be very flexible about departure and arrival dates and times.
I’ve heard of booking passage on cargo ships. Know anything about that?
Oh, 2 adults and 2 kids traveling fom Texas, if that matters.

Best Answers To Your Questions About Travel from France To England

Travel France To England

Susan asks…

Is it practicable to travel every fortnight between England and France by car with a dog?

The dog has a pet passport, but I don’t want to inflict tapeworm treatment on it every time it came back to England from France if I travelled that frequently. The dog has to have the treatment max 24 hrs before traveling from France to England, each time.

Yaz answers:

No it is not. You have answered your question, that tapeworm treatment is compulsory each time you return to the UK and so would be excessive for the dog every two weeks. We travel back & forth every 6 weeks or so with three
